When you first start looking for homes in Bangor Maine you may find some “steals” on the Web. Homes that are advertised as handyman’s specials. It is very important to look at the neighborhood when looking at these houses. If the homes surrounding the house in question are well maintained and it is a nice neighborhood, then you should calculate what it will take to improve the home to a comparable standard. If the cost of the fixer-upper and the cost of the home improvements is still under the median cost of other houses in the neighborhood and you have the skills or the cash to do the repairs, then buying a fixer-upper might be a good investment. You can then make the house into your home!
However, beware of homes that are extremely cheap in neighborhoods that are in a decline. The home’s price may be not only a reflection of the condition of the house, but of the declining neighborhood. In 1791, settlers from the area decided to incorporate into a town. The Reverend Seth Noble promoted the name Sunbury, and went to Boston with the settlers' petition (at the time, Maine was part of Massachusetts). It is said that Noble was whistling a hymn written by William Tans'ur called Bangor when the Boston official asked him what he wanted the town's name to be. Noble, thinking that the official was asking him the name of the hymn, replied "Bangor". To many people, this story seems extremely unlikely.
In the 19th century, Bangor was a center of the timber and logging business and at one point late in the century was said to be the richest city per capita in the world. Many of the timber barons of the time lived in elaborate Victorian houses that still stand on West Broadway. The city is home to author Stephen King, who lives in one of those ornate houses. It is noteworthy for its large number of substantial old churches, as well as its imposing canopy of shade trees. -- Source: Wikipedia.com
